UK Has Alot To Play For In Knoxville

This weekend’s installment of the annual UK / UT game could be called the Battle Of Who Could Care Less, but  I see a lot to play for Saturday, especially Kentucky.

  • Get off the schneid -both schools come in win less in SEC play (along with Auburn). UTs last conference win came against Vandy last season. UKs last conference win came against UT last season. A win is a win and better than a loss if you are 0-7  in conference play. One win, especially over a rival, would be big. In the eyes of Big Blue, a win over UT makes this season memorable.
  • “The one thing Tennessee always does is…. “– this is what fired UT coach Derek Dooley said last season after beating Vandy. Funny thing is that the ‘Dores had beaten the Vols more recently than UK had beaten the Vols, so it would have applied to UK more than Vandy. At any rate, UK beat UT last season and Vandy beat UT this season and the Vols are in free fall off of Rocky Top. This is an opportunity for UK.
  • Momentum – On paper, the Vols look better than UK and have more wins.  They were briefly ranked in the Top 25, but have since  dropped 6 of their last 7.   UK has been abysmal, but expectations were low to begin with before injuries ravaged this already thin team.  Since firing coach Joker Phillips, UK had a bye week to rest, recover and refocus. UK won last week and comes into Knoxville on a higher note. UT is tired, lost last week and are playing their final game for an interim coach in what will be a less than capacity crowd. The coaching change was necessary in Knoxville, but I think this makes them unstable for Saturday. The Cats have Mo and the Vols don’t.
  • All Grown Up – UKs reliance on freshmen and sophomores has been really hard to watch, but they have played most of the season this way and have grown up a bit…..I hope.
  • Joke is on UT – On November 24, 1984, senior Joker Phillips led UK in receptions and also to the last UK win in Knoxville. On November 24, 2012, current head coach (for the last time) Joker Phillips may lead his team to win in Knoxville again. His players love him and this will be the last time they will play for him. Joker is a good guy and Kentucky through and through. What better way to send him off than after beating UT in Knoxville?

With all of the adversity this season, if UK were to win this game it would give the Cats 2 straight wins over the Vols, end a losing streak in Knoxville, be a spring board into next season for the young player, give the new coach something to build on and give the out going coach something that has not happened since Blanton Collier replaced the Bear – a winning coaching record against the Vols.

There is a lot to play for this weekend in Knoxville.

Well, that didn’t work out. Guess that’s why I am not a football coach.
