Day One of My Fast

People fast for many reasons.

breaking-bread2Some fast to get closer to God. Others fast around big decisions so they have clarity. Me?¬† I was going to fast because my wife asked me to do it with her. So after blindly agreeing, I learned the goal was three days and all I could have to eat or drink was juice, broth, decaf tea or water. Nothing else. No meat, vegetables, bread, sweets, coffee, chips, fruit, nuts, eggs…. zip.

Even though I wasn’t mentally prepared and had not truly counted the cost, I thought I could do thee days no problem. I mean if the USA put a man on the moon, and North Korea has the capability to nuke¬† us (HA!), then surely I can fast for three days, right? Plus, I thought it would help me to focus on important things in life (relationship with God, family, career).

Day One

  • 6:30 am – I’ve been up for 30 minutes and no coffee has been no problem. I’m enjoying my decaf tea and water.
  • 9:00 am – I’m struck by how large a part of my life is related to food and eating. Around where I live, food is plentiful, accessible, and largely inexpensive. I’m also stuck by wanting to eat breakfast.
  • 1:30 pm – The 9:00am entry was my clearest thought all day because everything got really jumbled around lunch time when my stomach said “feed me” and I couldn’t because I was fasting. Instead, I watched my kids eat grilled cheese and apples while I had a juice. From where I sit, fasting sucks.
  • 2:00 pm- I’m hungry, my head hurts, and I have no energy. All I want to do is eat and then go back to bed.
  • 9:00 pm – Not sure what happened the last few hours other than not eating dinner, unless you count the broth, which is not a dinner. I think my wife is talking to me, but I’m too tired to understand the words coming out of her mouth. Going to bed. Bottom line: today was not without temptations and challenges, but I had chances to snack, and didn’t. Good for me. Productivity, however, suffered. Didn’t get a lot done.
